Greater Houston, and Harris County specifically, is one of the most notorious slab-foundation-repair markets in the country, and the reason is the soil. Humble sits inside a coastal-prairie expansive-clay association: smectitic Vertisols that swell when wet and shrink when dry, moving unevenly under a slab and racking doors, cracking walls, and un-leveling floors as they go. But "Humble is on expansive clay" is not quite right. The more accurate sentence: expansive clay is present at the county level and common in the association, but parcel-dependent, not guaranteed under every lot. Both halves of that sentence matter.

The soil family under Harris County

The Harris County general soil map is dominated by the Lake Charles–Bernard and Midland–Beaumont associations (clayey, very slowly permeable soils), with the Harris series itself present along the southeastern coastal fringe. All three signature series are true Vertisols with smectitic (montmorillonite) mineralogy, which is the specific clay chemistry responsible for shrink-swell behavior:

That's the kind of shrink-swell force this soil family is capable of.

The caveat: a measured point came back non-expansive

This is where the story gets more careful than a generic "Humble is on clay" page. A USDA Soil Data Access point query run at the Humble town centroid (near the West Fork of the San Jacinto River) returned a dominant soil component of Addicks loam, a non-expansive floodplain soil (its plasticity/linear-extensibility number sits well below the threshold that defines an expansive soil).

That refines the story above rather than erasing it. The county-level Vertisol association is real, and it's the underlying reason greater Houston has this reputation at all. But a single measured point near the San Jacinto floodplain landed on a non-expansive loam, which means the soil under the broader Humble market is a mix, and expansive-clay dominance is parcel-dependent, not uniform. The Vertisol facts above remain solid as a description of the regional association and the county's overall foundation-repair demand driver; they are not proof that every specific lot sits on expansive clay.

What this means for a homeowner: the county-level story is why foundation problems are common enough in this market to be a known thing, but it does not tell an individual homeowner what is under their own house. For that, a per-parcel Web Soil Survey lookup (a free tool run by USDA) is the honest next step rather than assuming either "definitely clay" or "definitely safe."

When soil is officially "expansive": the code definition

Building codes don't leave this to judgment calls. Per the International Building Code, a soil is classified as expansive if it meets several lab-tested criteria together (plasticity index, particle size, and clay-mineral content), or more simply, if it tests above an expansion index of 20. Texas state guidance separately flags a COLE value above 0.06 as able to cause structural damage, the threshold referenced above. These are the numbers an engineer's soil test is checking against, not a visual guess.

What moves a foundation

The physics is straightforward once the clay chemistry is in place. Expansive clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. High moisture makes the clay heave and lift the foundation; drought makes it lose volume and settle. The damage almost never comes from uniform movement. It comes from uneven moisture: drought drying the perimeter while a downspout keeps one corner wet, or a tree pulling water from one side of the slab. That unevenness is differential movement, and differential movement is exactly what racks door frames, slopes floors, and cracks walls.
