That mechanism is essentially irrelevant in Humble. The ground here rarely freezes at all; the frost-free growing season runs roughly 303 days a year. The actual driver on Gulf-coast expansive clay is the opposite kind of extreme: heat and drought drying the clay out, followed by heavy seasonal rain swelling it back up.
Humble's own numbers
Humble's climate record is unusually direct: Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH) sits physically inside the city, so these numbers describe Humble itself, not a regional proxy.
- Hot season: roughly 3.9 months, late May through late September, with average daily highs above 87°F.
- The hottest month is August, with a NOAA 1991–2020 normal high of about 94.9°F (and a normal low around 75.4°F), corroborated independently by the airport's own July normal high of about 94.5°F.
- Rainfall: roughly 49 inches a year, concentrated April through September, so the wet season arrives on top of, not instead of, the hot season.
- Frost-free season: about 303 days a year, meaning hard freezes are rare and brief when they happen.
Put those together and the pattern is clear: four straight months of intense heat and evaporation dry the clay out, cracking it open, and then a concentrated rainy season re-saturates it, every year, on a predictable seasonal schedule.

What the cycle does to a slab
The physics carries directly from the soil chemistry covered on why Humble foundations move: expansive clay shrinks as it dries and swells as it wets. During the dry months, clay under a slab's perimeter can lose enough volume to open cracks and pull away, letting the edge of the foundation settle. When the rain returns, that same clay swells back. If it swells unevenly (one side of the house drying faster because of shade, drainage, or a tree pulling water from one spot), the foundation racks and twists rather than moving uniformly. That differential movement is what shows up as stuck doors, sloped floors, and stair-step cracks.
Sharpened by drought and flood extremes
Houston-area weather doesn't stay in its lane, either. Regional drought-to-flood swings (Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019 are the well-known recent examples) push the normal seasonal cycle to its extremes in both directions: longer, harder drought stretches followed by sudden, heavy saturation. Each extreme event is a sharper version of the same mechanism the ordinary summer already runs every year.
The Kingwood/Atascocita water-table wrinkle
Near the San Jacinto River, which runs through the Kingwood and Atascocita areas adjacent to Humble, there's an additional local nuance: a rising and falling water table tied to the river. Where that applies, groundwater levels add another source of soil-moisture variation on top of the drought/rain cycle described above, which is worth flagging for homes closer to the river corridor specifically.
A secondary factor: regional groundwater withdrawal
One more system sits underneath all of this, layered on top rather than driving it directly: Humble's public water supply draws roughly 70 percent of its water from Gulf Coast Aquifer groundwater wells. Historically, aquifer groundwater withdrawal across north Harris County has been a documented driver of regional land-surface subsidence, a slow, broad settling of the ground surface itself. This is a real but secondary regional factor; it isn't quantified at the individual-parcel level the way the soil-moisture cycle above is, so it's worth knowing about as context rather than treating as a primary diagnosis for a specific crack.
What this rules out
To be direct: Humble is not a frost-heave market. If a national foundation-repair article talks about freeze-thaw cycles, winter frost lines, or frozen ground lifting a slab, that content was written for a different climate and doesn't describe what's happening in Humble.
